Press Release 07/12/2018 Yogic Practices to alleviate Menstrual Disorders and Symptoms Sadhguru looks at the fundamental reason why so many women experience emotional turmoil during the biological process of menstruation. Q: I’m experiencing a lot of premenstrual emotional turmoil, and I’m wondering if there are any yogic remedies or practices that can help. Sadhguru: The menstrual cycles, which are physiological in nature, unfortunately cause many women a lot of psychological disturbances, due to lack of synchronization between these two aspects of who you are. There is also an elemental dimension to it. The five elements, which form the most fundamental geometry of the body, have to be in sync as well. Pancha Bhuta processes can ease these issues because they organize the elements within your system. There is nothing miraculous about it. The weird thing is actually that so many women are going through a normal biological process as if it was some abominable thing – simply because no one ever taught them how to be in sync with their own system. Psychological disturbances resulting from physiological processes essentially show a disconnect between the different aspects of who you are. Menstrual cycles may cause some physiological pain, which needs to be handled medically. But they should not cause psychological disturbances. Just doing the Bhuta Shuddhi sadhana could bring total relief. Shambhavi Mahamudra Alleviates Menstrual Disorders The benefits of yoga in relieving ailments suffered by women have been under much study in recent years. 75% of women are thought to experience problems related to menstruation, which has a huge physical, psychological, social and economic impact on their life. The primary means of treatment for such issues are known to offer less than satisfactory relief, even when patients choose surgery as a last resort. A team from the Poole Hospitals NHS Trust, UK, and the Indiana University School of Medicine conducted a survey female practitioners of the Shambhavi Mahamudra, a yogic kriya practice offered in Isha Yoga programs. Results showed significant decreases in dysmenorrhea, symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, heaviness of menstrual flow, irregularity of menstrual cycle, the need for medical or surgical intervention for disorders, and the impairment of work during the menstrual period. The authors conclude that the kriya “can be considered as an adjunct therapy for menstrual disorders given the improved symptoms in all the parameters.†Read more about the benefits of yoga for menstrual disorders. Though many pop culture programs mock premenstrual syndrome – colloquially known as “PMS†– the reality is that the condition may be more widespread and serious than previously believed. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as many as 85% of menstruating women suffer from at least one PMS symptom throughout their monthly cycles. A few of the most common symptoms of PMS include: Though any menstruating woman can experience PMS symptoms, they tend to occur most commonly in women who are between their late 20s and early 40s, who have at least one child and who have either a personal or family history of depression or other mood disorders. For most of these women, PMS symptoms aren’t severe enough to warrant medical treatment (although alternative therapies and lifestyle changes may provide valuable relief). In rare cases – estimated to be between 3-8% of PMS sufferers – symptoms are severe enough to warrant the separate designation of “premenstrual dysphoric disorder†(PMDD). Women who are experiencing the signs of PMDD may be encouraged by doctors to seek out prescription medications – including ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen or birth control pills – in order to regulate the menstrual cycle and provide symptom relief. If you believe you are experiencing either PMS or PMDD, it’s important to first rule out other conditions whose symptoms may mimic menstrual difficulties. In particular, depression, anxiety, menopause, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and endocrine system issues all share common symptoms with PMS and PMDD, but require different medical treatments for proper management. Once these conditions have been ruled out, it’s best to seek out natural remedies for PMS – rather than to pursue pharmaceutical solutions that only mask the underlying difficulties the body is experiencing. A few of these possible remedies include: Though regular exercise may be the last thing you want to do while struggling with PMS symptoms, getting up and moving around can help your body to facilitate the menstrual cycle as efficiently as possible. If you feel up to it, continue with your regular exercise and fitness program – whatever that entails. But if not, stick to gentle movements like properly offered, classical hata yoga and slow walking that enable the body to be active without placing excess demands on its resources. Again, while it might be tempting to comfort the PMS symptoms you’re experiencing by consuming more salt, sugary foods or alcohol, introducing these substances into the body is not supportive and only ends up taxing the resources that would otherwise be used by the reproductive organs. Instead, focus on nourishing your body with healthy foods, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and soaked nuts. Together, these foods will help you to feel better for far longer than an unhealthy treat will! If diet and exercise changes alone aren’t enough to bring about PMS symptom relief, consider enrolling in the Inner Engineering program. Yoga for Women Should the practice of yoga for women and men be different? Are there specific yoga postures for women that they should or should not do? Yoga for Men vs. Women Should the practice of yoga for women and men be different? Are there specific yoga postures for women that they should or should not do? Traditionally, Sadhguru explains, most yogic practices were created with the male body in mind, which is why women should be careful about what they practice and when they practice. He looks at how certain practices being taught around the world today are not suitable for women as they may cause physical damage and injury. Watch this video on yoga for women.
