LearnQuest is excited to present Shaam-e-Ghazal, an evening of ghazals presented by Dr. Roshan Bharti, a very talented ghazal singer who's exquisite style will remind you of Ustad Mehdi Hasan. Dr. Roshan hails from Rajistan and we are fortunate we were able to connect with him to organize this concert before he returns to India. We know that this is short notice but we just connected with Dr. Roshan and did not want to pass up this opportunity to have him perform for us in the Boston area. Our own Nitin Mitta will be accompanying on tabla. Dr. Roshan Bharti Born into a family of professional musicians spanning 17 generation. Carrying the torch of the family’s legacy, his grandfather was Ustad Jamal Khan, a famous vocalist who belonged to the Seniya gharana (Seniya School of Music). Seniya gharana, also known as the “Kalavant gharana†(Kalavant School of Music) of Hindustani classical music, traces its roots back to famous musician Miyan Tansen, one of the nine jewels of Emperor Akbar’s court (15th century). Ustad Jamal Khan is known to the world as Jagjit Singh ji’s guru. - Successor of a rich musical tradition of Seniya Gahara (Seniya School of Music)

- Trained in a guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) tradition since the tender age of five. I took my training in classical music and ghazals under the able guidance of my father Ustad Yasmin Bharti and the training continues after 45 years.

- Youngest member of All India Radio and Doordarshan (Indian National Television Station) Audition Board.
Ninti Mitta Nitin Mitta, is one of the most versatile and sought after tabla players of his generation. Apart from being a dynamic soloist, he is a highly sought after accompanist, who has performed worldwide with some of India’s most celebrated Indian classical musicians such as Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Imrat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Nishat Khan, Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee amongst many others. In 2010, Nitin joined forces with Grammy Nominee, Pianist Vijay Iyer and electric guitarist R. Prasanna, to produce a studio album titled Tirtha, that blends elements of contemporary jazz with the North and South Indian traditional ragas and compositions. He has been a regular Tabla player for Juno Awardee Singer, Kiran Ahulwalia. Born and raised in Hyderabad, India, Nitin Mitta started his formal training in tabla at age 9, under Pandit G. Satyanarayana from Hyderabad which led to his first tabla solo performance at age 10. Nitin then took advanced training in tabla from Pandit Arvind Mulgaonkar of Bombay. Both of Nitin's Guru's are disciples of Ustad Amir Hussain Khan, the legendary doyen of the Farukhabad School of Tabla. During his learning years while in India, Nitin won the first prize in the All India Music Competition and a National Scholarship from the Govt. of India. In 2002, Nitin moved to the United States of America, where he joined as a faculty member of the Learn Quest Academy of Music. He also received a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on Arts. Nitin performed at several prominent venues including the Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art In New York, The Smithsonian in Washington DC, The Royce Hall in Los Angeles. Some of the music festivals and venues in India, that he has performed include Pandit Motiram and Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroh in Hyderabad, Harivallabh Sangeet Samaroh in Jalandhar, Music Academy in Chennai, Nehru Center in Bombay.
