Appeal to South Asian Community Help Save Vasundra
Continuing to make the efforts to find a matching donor for Vasundra diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, we are seeking your help to become a volunteer.
A cheek swab drive is planned for this Saturday, Dec. 23rd at Bedford location, from 10 am to 12 noon.
Looking for the age group from 18 to 44 years, males or females. Registration on site and cheek swab takes only few minutes.
At this time, we are only looking to find a match by taking a cheek swab. Please see attachments for further details and this is an absolute volunteer drive.
Thanks for your support. Address: First Parish Church in Bedford 75, The Great Road Room 204 (Second Floor) Bedford, MA Contact: 781 475 4565, 978 697 1848
What if you are a match
• A small blood sample will be collected to confirm you are a good match and healthy enough to donate. • If confirmed, the next step is donation of stem cells, either from bone marrow or from the blood. Both methods are less invasive. • Bone marrow donation/ Marrow harvesting: Stem cells are removed from the hip area under anesthesia. The body regenerates the stem cells in few weeks. • Blood stem cells from your arm: Blood is drawn from your arm to collect the blood stem cells and there is no blood loss. This process is done 78% of the time. • Cheek swab donors must note that it is an absolute volunteer decision in trying to help a person in urgent need. • Initially, we are looking for cheek swab match from a pool of young SriLankans or South Asians and your support is greatly appreciated. • Note that this information is stored in a National Data Pool and the volunteer can be contacted to donate for any matching recipient.
Volunteers have the final decision.
