Press Release 11/15/2017 SAHELI’S NIRBHAYA – A FUN FILLED FUNDRAISING GALA Three years ago, Neeru felt hopeless and stuck. She was in an abusive marriage, had no money of her own, and knew no person she could turn to. Chances are, you’ve actually met Neeru. Approximately 1 in 4 adult women experience threats or physical abuse from their intimate partners. That number is even higher for South Asian women. Neeru is your friend, your neighbor, your relative, or your co-worker. Fortunately, the Neeru in this particular story reached out to Saheli. Today, she is a confident woman training to be a nurse practitioner in specialty healthcare, and she is no longer experiencing abuse. Saheli is a community-based organization in Massachusetts with the mission to empower South Asian women and families to lead safe and healthy lives. During the past twenty-one years Saheli has taken significant strides to end domestic and intimate partner violence in the South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepali and Sri Lankan) communities. For example, in 2016 alone, we: v Assisted 182 women, 300 children and 200 elderly parents with concerns related to domestic violence, abandonment, divorce, and child custody v Provided financial aid for career skills training and professional certifications to women seeking greater economic independence and families in crisis v Escorted women to police stations and district courts to translate, interpret and advocate for them to district attorneys and judges v Provided over 1,353 hours of counseling and responded to over 300 helpline calls Every day, Saheli helps women like Neeru transition from being victims to survivors, and it does so with the support and strength of people like YOU. Your generosity enables Saheli to provide free services to the South Asian American community, as a result, thousands of families are safer and healthier today. Saheli’s very dedicated staff and volunteers are working hard every single day for a safer and healthier community, not just for today but also for the future. We invite you to join and celebrate Saheli’s efforts at our upcoming gala and fundraiser, Nirbhaya, on Friday, December 8th at the Woburn Hilton at 6:00 pm. The gala promises a fulfilling evening of networking and entertainment as Saheli celebrates 21 years of service to the South Asian community. Together we can make the women in our community “Nirbhaya†- women without fear. Ticket and sponsorship information are below.
