President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday named Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina as his choice to become ambassador to the United Nations . If confirmed by the Senate, Ms. Haley, daughter of Sikh Immigrants, now in her second term as South Carolina governor, would succeed Samantha Power, who has represented the United States at the United Nations since 2013. She would be the first Indian American to hold the position.
Ms. Haley was a strong critic of candidate Trump and gave her support to Marco Rubio. As Governor of South Carolina Ms. Haley had to deal with with the murder of nine African-Americans in a Charleston church. She presided over the removal of the confederate flag from the state capitol.
