Press Release

AID Boston & MIT present “Screening Resistance: Film as Activism in India” in conjunction with the Udaipur Film Festival

AID Boston & MIT chapters will be screening “Flames of Freedom” on Sunday, October 16 at 4PM at MIT, building 3, room 333 as part of the “Screening Resistance: Film as Activism in India” film festival being organized by the Udaipur Film Society (UFS).

The screening will be followed by a discussion with a few UFS members. Over the weekend, CoR (Cinema of Resistance) societies around the world – from London, to Udaipur, to Boston - will host screenings in solidarity and engage directly with filmmakers about the issues presented in the various films being screened at the Udaipur Film Festival.

The 2016 Udaipur Film Festival has issued a call for "Justice for Delta Meghwal and Rohit Vemula," two promising Dalit youth whose lives were snuffed out in 2016, the former by rape and killing and the latter by institutional murder.

About “Flames of Freedom”:

A spontaneous uprising of shudras (low-caste Hindus) emerges against the oppressive Brahmanism that had enslaved the original inhabitants for nearly two centuries. They’ll sacrifice anything, even their lives, to retrieve the land that once belonged to them. Watch the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajrjsdABrBA

What is the Cinema of Resistance? For the last 11 years, the Cinema of Resistance (COR) has been a campaign in India to take people-centric cinema to the common people. The COR carries out initiatives in small and big cities as well as towns-localities by organizing community screenings, film clubs and shows at schools and colleges. During this journey the campaign has categorically highlighted the need to screen documentary films, in contrast to the more popular feature films. To support a platform for films focusing people’s struggles, the Cinema of Resistance does not seek corporate sponsorship or large institutional funding.
