10/19/2003 SETU- Stage Ensemble Theatre Unit, is a newly formed group of amateur theatre enthusiasts, who are working to bring Indian theatre in English to the Greater Boston Community. SETU’s mission is to build bridges between Indian and western cultures through the medium of theatre. India has a rich and diverse tradition in drama starting with timeless works by ancient Sanskrit playwrights. Indian theatre has found expressions in diverse forms from folk theatre to musicals to modern drama forms. SETU will attempt to use these idioms to highlight various social, political, and cultural issues from India, past and present, and in the process, create a better appreciation of India’s heritage and culture. It also plans to organize drama workshops for students and drama enthusiasts in the near future. The organization wishes to encourage young people of all races and ethnicity to become involved further in their community by participating in the cultural shows and activities offered by the group, and volunteers of any age are welcome who wish to become a member of the organization in a variety of capacities. SETU is pleased to announce its debut at the United Methodist Church in Belmont on November 1& 2, with two productions: Power to the People, a farcical skit, based on two short stories by Bengali writer Sanjeeb Chatterjee; and its lead presentation - Kamala, a play by the eminent Indian playwright, Vijay Tendulkar. Kamala is based on the real life experience of an Indian journalist, who in the 1980’s, exposed a social malaise that continues to pervade contemporary India, despite all strides taken toward modernity. SETU is a registered non-profit organization. SETU is in the nascent stages of its development and welcomes any support from individuals or organizations.
