Shuchita Rao 04/28/2016 On Saturday, May 7 at 7pm, MITHAS (MIT Heritage Arts of South Asia) will present a Bharatanatyam dance recital by Vidushi Priyadarshini Govind with live music by Vidwaan TM Krishna in the Big Kresge auditorium. This program promises to be very exciting because both performers are powerhouses in their own disciplines. They are also articulate intellectuals who like to get into the unknown territory where they respond to each other’s creativity and discover new things in the moment. The artists, acknowledged masters of their respective art forms have been experimenting with communicating emotions not just through melody but by going beyond the text/lyrics as well as experimenting with texts in various world languages. Priyadarshini Govind in an interview to Philadelphia radio said “It is the sheer quality of music, of Krishna’s imagination and vision that will make this concert different and special. We have collaborated earlier and I want us to challenge ourselves at every possibility.†For Govind, Bharatanatyam has been her first love since she was six years old. After initial training with Smt. Usha Priyadarshini, Govind trained with Guru Swamimalai Rajarathnam since the age of ten years and also received training in the special art of “Abhinaya†with Padmabhushan, Guru Kalanidhi Narayanan. Vocalist TM Krishna who is known for his resonant voice and scholarship in Carnatic classical music began his formal training in vocal music from Sri. B. Seetharama Sarma at the age of six. Krishna received specialized training from Chengalpet Ranganathan in “Ragam Tanam Pallavi†and went on to receive advanced training from the late Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer for more than seven years. TM Krishna studied at “The Schoolâ€, an institution founded and run by the J. Krishnamurti Foundation which has influenced his perceptions and outlook towards life. On the subject of collaborating with Priyadarshini Govind TM Krishna said “I have worked with danseuse Priyadarshini Govind for 2 or 3 years. I will not be singing “FOR†her dance. There will be music in the dance and I will be “IN†the dance when it is happening.†Tickets for this special concert can be purchased at http://www.mithas.org or at www.lokvani.com Free admission to all children, and students with valid ID.
