COOKING WITH SAVSANI

I have a lot of interests, but my nearest and dearest will tell you that I have a love for cooking. Not just cooking, but learning about different ingredients across the globe, their significance, history, how it’s cultivated so on and so forth. New Year’s is always a time of resolutions reflecting what we want to remove and what we want to add to ourselves or our routine or who we want to be. I normally don’t partake in any New Year’s resolutions of sorts, but I always start my New Year with a morning drink that’s sure to cleanse and detoxify the body after consuming the heavier and sweeter foods over the holiday season. Then I finish the day with an evening drink to heal the body after a long day in cold weather. 

SAVSANI LEMON WATER DETOX  

INGREDIENTS

1 lemon squeezed 

1/8 tsp grated turmeric root  (you can find the best quality root at Patel Brothers) 

1/8 tsp grated ginger 

16oz water 

1 tbs organic Himalayan raw honey 

3 mint leaves 

3 thin lemon slices 

DIRECTIONS

In a small saucepan, combine turmeric, ginger, lemon juice and water. Bring mixture stirring, bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Add the tbs of organic honey and stir again. In a large mug pour mixture. Garnish with mint leaves and lemon slices.

Warm lemon water helps to remove excess fats. 

Turmeric and ginger act as an anti-inflammatory.

TIPS

• Never boil honey as it creates ‘ama’ or disease in the body.

• Boiling honey also removes the antioxidants from the raw product.

• Always try to pick sweeteners that are organic since often they can be made with additives such as GMO sugar cane. 

SAVSANI ALMOND WHOLE DRINK   

INGREDIENTS

4 cups milk

1/4 cup jaggery

15 soaked almonds 

1/8 tsp ground cardamom 

1/8 tsp ground saffron

1/8 tsp ground nutmeg 

Ground cinnamon, for serving 

DIRECTIONS

Bring milk, almonds, and jaggery to a simmer in a medium saucepan, on medium heat, stirring jaggery until dissolved. Stir in cardamom, saffron, and nutmeg. Divide into four mugs. Sprinkle cinnamon on top of each drink. 

HEALTH BENEFITS 

Tryptophan to help promote relaxation and sleep.

Clears symptoms of constipation. 

Anti-aging properties because antioxidants attack free radicals. 

Jaggery has an excellent source of iron.  

Almonds help to build tissue mass while reducing weight. 

TIPS

• Add the spices at the very end, since they are delicate and can easily burn changing their natural flavor.

• Soak the almonds overnight in a copper container, it has a lot of added health benefits such as helping to regulate the function of your thyroid gland. 

• Combine all spices together and add a 1/8 tsp of brown sugar crush them with a mortar and pestle, it will bring more flavor to the spices.
