Hum Aur Tum, Kuchh Anmol Ratan In the memory of the late Amol Mehta

On Dec 5th 2015, Rageshree Mehta honored the memory of her husband by celebrating his passion for Bollywood movies and music with Hum Aur Tum, the second episode of Just Duets, at the Natick Elks Lodge.

Unlike other concerts and events, Hum Aur Tum brought together for one evening, under one roof, family, friends and neighbors of the Mehtas, to share memories of their friend, to relive some good times, and celebrate through music. Although Amol was not present physically, the strains of the melodies must surely have travelled the outer reaches to touch his spirit.

Why just duets? Because the Mehta’s journey is one of many milestones achieved together as a couple - the joys and triumphs, the mundane and the trivial, the small and the big, where through a conscious coupling, they created tunes and melodies that bolstered their love and passion for life and art.

Rageshree drew on her personal memories and experiences to select songs that held special significance and meaning in her life with Amol.

Striving for a mix of old and new songs, and a wide representation of mainstream playback singers and music composers, Siraj Khan worked on pairing the singers, and the singers with the songs.

Eshani & Jasmine Shah, Harish & Bini Dang, and Siraj Khan & Gauri Chandna sparkled as hosts, walking the listeners through the songs, hand in hand, sharing personal anecdotes and vignettes of Bollywood baatein.

On stage were Anuradha Palakurthi, Ajay Koul, Diya, Meena Sundaram, Nayanika, Rageshree Mehta, Sankar Gangaikondan, Shantanu Sen, Shekhar Sastri, Shikha Bajpai, Tehniyat Hakim and Ujjwal Parikh, accompanied by the Dancing Divas on select numbers.

Behind the scenes were Jawed Wahid’s sound engineering with Meena Sundaram’s unerring music and track coordination. Masala Art spiced up the evening with dinner, and the Lodge’s bar enlivened the evening with good spirits.

The proceeds of the show were donated to Desai Foundation and India Circle of Caring.

It was a bittersweet evening, with a spectacular parade of songs to express the varied moods and colors of life. Pehla Nasha, a salute to first love, Gir Gaya Jhumka and Saanjh Dali, songs of romance and flirtation; Paaon choo Lene Do and Bahut Door Mujhe Chale Jaana Hai, songs of seduction and adoration; Raat Ke Humsafar & Hum Aur Tum, songs celebrating togetherness; and Bachpan Ke Din Bhi Kya Din The, a song of nostalgia for innocent and carefree childhood.

Shail Mehta, their son, paid a moving and eloquent tribute to his father’s memory, capturing the essence of his father’s personality with personal anecdotes. It is through music that we can find meaning in life. That is the Mehta’s story and legacy. And just as life goes on, so will their music.
