(This article is sponsored by Masala Art) Triveni School of Dance Showcases Indian Classical Dance to Greater Boston Community With Its 39th Annual Show
On Sunday, November 8th, Triveni School of Dance, founded by Neena Gulati, presented its 39th Annual Show Program to a full house at the MIT Kresge auditorium. The program began by showcasing the tiniest of Triveni’s dancers, dancing to well-known favorites such as the Surya Nritya, also known as the Sun Dance, and story-based pieces like Bho Shambho, which paints a picture of Lord Shiva and his flowing locks, akin to the River Ganges. In the second half of the show, Triveni’s more experienced dancers presented the lively Shiv Shakti, a fast-moving piece with complex footwork and creative and dynamic formations, Purva Ranga, a melodic and graceful invocation, and Hindolam Thillana, a song that includes lyrics and musical syllables to punctuate rhythm. Some of the numbers were pure dance pieces, and others told the stories of Lord Shiva, the destroyer, through a delightful combination of intricately rhythmic footwork (nritta) and emotional storytelling through facial expressions and meaningful hand gestures (abhinaya). Mahadeva, a final tribute to Lord Shiva and a powerful Odissi composition, brought the program to a close and featured some of Triveni’s finest and most talented dancers.
In total, over 250 dancers ranging from ages 5 to 55 donned their bells and took to the stage to perform 17 separate classical Indian dance pieces in three distinct styles, Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi and Odissi. The audience was captivated throughout the show, and many expressed their admiration of the dancers’ beauty and grace. Here are some choice quotes of the crowd’s general impression of Triveni’s production, from students to mothers to avid appreciators of the arts:
“We want to thank you on behalf of Mahi to have such a wonderful teacher like you†– Sonal “I was so mesmerized by the dancers and how amazingly they expressed different stories through dance.†– Shilpi “It was a wonderful performance yesterday by all students. Suyasha was happy to learn and perform as your student.†– Kalyani “Thanks for the opportunity you give to all of the kids from Triveni to perform at Kresge Auditorium via the annual show.†– Shilpa “Thanks for doing what you do. Your magical touch has changed so many lives.†– Mohini “What a great feeling to see so many dancers performing their beautifully choreographed dances this weekend! All their hard work and their teachers work, shone through!†– Garima “Many of the dances were emotionally moving and nearly brought tears to my eyes. So many of your dancers are so talented. We as a family want to thank you for all the love and guidance that you give Gabrielle.†– Elsa and Gabby “It is truly inspiring to watch the children giggling and being silly and then transforming into serious performers while on the stage.†– Veena
The Triveni School of Dance Annual Show is a product of the hard work and dedication of its founder, Neena Gulati, known to her students and their parents as “Neenaji†or “Neena Aunty†is a celebrated dancer, choreographer, artistic director, and teacher from New Delhi, India who founded the Triveni School of Dance in Brookline, MA in 1971.
