Genius of Tagore meets Indian Classical Music
A medley of events was presented by Swaralipi Academy of Music, Wayland, MA on October 3rd at Arlington Center for Arts, Arlington, MA. In the first segment Swaralipi community, comprising mostly of children staged Bidusak, a contemporary play based on a short story by Rabindranath Tagore and written and directed by Rahul Ray. The play allegorically depicted omnipresence violence in the world of today and yesteryears instigated by deception and trifle matters. But ultimately the conscience of mankind, represented by Bidusak, or the court-jester triumphs over the tyranny of the evil king.
In the second segment of the event Pandit Partha Bose, eminent sitari from Kolkata of Senia Maihar gharana and Sri Indranil Mullick, a disciple of tabla maestro Sri Swapan Chaudhuri and also from Kolkata presented Indian classical sitar and tabla duo. The ace players took hold of the stage with their music with a vilambit alaap and a rapid-fire jhala in raag Mishra Kafi.
In the third segment a confluence of Rabindrasangeet, music of Tagore and Indian classical music was presented by Swapna Ray and Rahul Ray with music by Partha Bose (sitar), Indranil Mullick (tabla), Shivarakrishnan (bansuri), and Swapna Ray (harmonium). The highlight of this segment was convergence of improvised Indian classical raag-sangeet with Rabindrasangeet, structured along the line of sthayi, antara, sanchari and abhog in several compositions. The well-attended event ended with a vote thanks from Swaralipi community.
