Padma Bhushan Sudha Raghunathan' Concert at Chinmaya Mission, Boston - 1. Union St. Andover, MA 01810 Date - September 26th Time - 6:00 pm
Padma Bhushan, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt. Sudha Raghunathan is one of the most famous Carnatic vocalist in the tradition of the GNB school of music. She has been giving concerts all over the world for over three decades in front of huge audience and she will be at the Chinmaya Center on September 26th to do the same. The concert is scheduled to start at 6 pm and it will be with the collaboration of MITHAS.
Smt. Sudha received her initial training in Carnatic music from her mother V. Choodamani. From the age of three, she began to learn devotional songs. Her tutelage continued under B. V. Lakshman. In 1977, she received an Indian government scholarship to study Carnatic music under the legendry artist Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari and remained her student for thirteen years. She has also accompanied Dr. MLV in many of her concerts.
The awards and titles Smt. Sudha Raghunathan has received are too many to mention but two of the most notable ones are the 'Sangeetha Kalanidhi' awarded to her in 2013 by the very prestigious Music Academy of Chennai, India, it is important to note that she is one of the few younger artists to receive this high honor, and the 'Padma Bhushan' award by the Government of India in 2015. She has also received Padma Sree award in the field of Carnatic vocal music in 2004, Sangeetha Choodamani, from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai in 1997, and Kalaimamani award from the state government of Tamil Nadu, India in 1993.
Smt. Sudha will be accompanied on the violin by Boston's own Smt. Tara Bangalore. Tara is a well known vocal and violin teacher/artist in the Boston area who has accompanied Smt. Sudha Raghunathan on many occassions in India. Mridangam support will be given by Sri Akshay Ananthapadmanabhan who was brought up in the USA and moved to Chennai recently to pursue a full time career in Carnatic music.
Since Smt Sudha Raghunathan's upcoming concert at the Chinmaya Mission is in collaboration with MITHAS students and MITHAS members will have free admission to the concert. However, because of the size of the auditorium this number will be limited to the first 100 and will be given on a first come first served basis.
