AFMI Celebrates 25 Years

AFMI is a philanthropic, service based and issue-orientated organization formed by Muslim Americans of Indian origin in 1989. It strives to work towards the educational and economic uplift of downtrodden and deprived Indian Muslims by seeking cooperation among American and Indian relief and educational organizations. AFMI’s vision is……….
• Improve literacy and economic Status of Muslims in India.
• Help Muslims in India to contribute towards social, political and economic development of India.
• Strive to advance the cause of underprivileged masses in India in general, and Muslim masses in particular.
• Promote exchange of technology and other resources to development entrepreneurial and leadership skills.
• Encourage excellence in Muslim Youths both in North America and India to strengthen their “Muslim identity”.

This year’s convention theme was: Celebrating Excellence: AFMI’s 25 years of Service, Story of Resilience, Courage and Educational Renaissance. 

AFMI completed it’s 25 years of its hard work and serving to the community. The AFMI Boston Chapter got honor to host its Silver Jubilee Convention in Boston on August 29. 2015 at Burlington Marriott Burlington MA. 

Along with the Consul General of India and host committee there were almost 30+ delegation gathered at gala. Like Mr. Rick Jakious (Chief of Stafff for Congressman Seth Molton), Ms. Carla Power (UK), Mr. Frank Islam (DC), Dr. Azeem Khan Sherwani (India) AFMI President, Dr. Syed Azeemuddin (Houston), Mrs. Razia Ahmed (OH), Mr. Ali Quraishi (New Mexico),  Dr. Aslam Abdullah (LA) and AFMI trustee Dr. Nakadar (Michigan).

AFMI had given “Pride of India” Award to very selected dignitaries, e.g. Ram Vilas Paswan, and Dilip Kumar  who had made substantial contributions to Indian society. This year Mr. Frank F Islam was awarded the Pride of India. 

Consul General of India Mr. Dnyaneshwar Mulay gave awards to the recipient at Gala. In his speech he said that “I am so happy to see the most positive way to make India more proud. I learnt a lot here today about work of AFMI. " It gave me pleasure to see the way of progress of not only Muslims but other minorities of India.”

“The Nature of the Need! The fact that Muslims in India are socially, educationally and economically disadvantaged is well documented and plans to correct that have been on the Indian government’s radar screen for some time.” Said Mr. Islam. He further talked about Muslims civic engagement in India…. “What matters most is civic engagement from Indian American Muslims through AFMI.   Targeted civic engagement is the key to promoting educational and economic opportunities for Indian Muslims.”

Founder & Trustee Dr. A. R. Nakadar said in his welcome to the guest speech…

“It is a story of courage because AFMI office bearers and people working at ground level in India continued to work in spite of financial, social and other hardships. Despite all odds AFMI members stood firm, didn’t get dragged on into distractions, and moved ahead with a singular focus on its mission. This mission aim was a simple one---an educationally empowered India.” 

Other honorable guest were there too. Mr. Nadeem Mazen (Cambridge) , Ms. Carla Power (UK), Mr. Frank Islam (DC), Dr. Azeem Khan Sherwani (India) and, AFMI President, Dr. Syed Azeemuddin (Houston), Mrs. Razia Ahmed (OH), Mr. Ali Quraishi (New Mexico),  Dr. Aslam Abdullah (LA),  and AFMI trustee Dr. Nakadar (Michigan), Pham Nam, Commissioner of Immigration for State of Massachusetts.

Dr. Suhaib Siddiqi acknowledged in his Vote of Thanks Consul General of India Shri Dyaneshwar M. Mulay for thoughtful suggestions and support.
