Sonja Marrett Wins SABA GB 2015 Legal Intern Fellowship

Press Release
07/14/2015

The South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston (SABA GB) proudly congratulates Sonja Marrett, the winner of the SABA GB 2015 Legal Intern Fellowship, sponsored in part by a generous donation from
the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP. The $3,000 fellowship enables law students to work in otherwise unpaid summer internships at public interest organizations in Greater Boston.

Ms. Marrett, a rising second-year student at Boston College Law School, will complete her internship at the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) in Boston this summer. At CLF, she will receive a unique opportunity to research and draft legal memoranda involving the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act in  support of ongoing litigation, assist in drafting pleadings for state and federal administrative proceedings and litigation, and participate in case and program planning.

“Through this position and mentorship, I hope to learn the legal skills and strategies necessary to serve as an effective environmental advocate for low income communities as well as for broader policy goals,”

Ms. Marrett said. She expects that the internship will help improve her research, writing, and advocacy skills for her future work in environmental law and advocacy.

Ms. Marrett has previously worked at the following entities, all in Illinois: Mar Cal Law, P.C. as a paralegal, Sierra Club as a campaign organizer, The Law Office of Nancy A. Berté as a legal assistant,

and the Environmental Advocacy Center as a legal intern. She has also served as a volunteer for the Global Law Brigade and One Brick.

Since 1966, CLF has used strategies in law, science, policymaking, and business to find solutions to New England’s environmental problems. CLF’s activities have included cleaning up Boston Harbor, protecting
ocean fisheries to ensure continued supply, stopping unnecessary highway construction in scenic areas, and expanding access to public transportation.

SABA GB’s Legal Intern Fellowship Program provides funding for law students of South Asian descent working over the summer in otherwise unpaid legal positions at non-profit or government organizations,
or law students working in an unpaid legal internship focusing on the needs of the South Asian community.
