Each year, the India Society of Worcester organizes a Hindi Kavi Sammelan that is one of kind where laughter and poetry mixes to let the audience have a great time.  The Hasya Kavi Sammelan this year was held on May 2, 2015 at the India Society of Worcester Center in Shrewsbury Ma.

The event opened with a welcome by Ragini Seth, who set the tone with opening humorous remarks.  Three poets, Arun Gemini, Ved Prakash and Ritu Goyal from India presented poems in their own styles.  Kavi Sammelan is a popular forum where Hindi poets gather and present their poems while interacting with each other and the audience. The format is unique to Hindi Urdu poets.

Each poet choses to focus on a “Rasa”. For Arun Gemini, Hasya or laughter was the Rasa of choice.  While some of it was in poetic yet others was just a set of jokes. “People from Haryana had the first Kavi Sammelan” said Gemini. “Lord Krishna gave the 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita to the audience – Arjuna.”. He took this serious moment into a light vein and concluded with “at the end Lord Krishna said are you ready to pick up the bow or should I go on? “ A lot of the jokes were centered on the fact that sometimes poets do go on.  Ved Prakash was a VyangKar or a Satirist often basing his jokes on politics.  Ritu Goyal was a poet and a singer. She opened with a Sarswathi Vandana. Her beautiful voice touched the hearts of the audience.

The laughter from the jokes kept the audience entertained for the entire evening.
The audience looks forward to the next year when the poets will choose to entertain again.
