Chitra Parayath 07/30/2003
Women have made significant strides in the world of business in the last
few decades. Besides possessing willingness to defy social convention, women have had to use ingenuity, careful planning to balance work-life, and a strong commitment to career goals to excel in the fields of management and entrepreneurship.
Geetha Ramamurthy seems to embody the axiom "Whatever men can do, women can
do better". Geetha is known for her unending energy as well as her efficiency as a
manager ; her appointment as the Director of Operations of TiE, Boston was greeted
enthusiastically by several TiE Charter Members. Desh Deshpande said in a message to
Geetha "Congratulations! You make us all proud." Prashant H. Fadia,
Co-Chair, Charter Membership had this to say "I have enjoyed working with Geetha on
several occasions and her enthusiasm, energy and effervescence is an
inspiration. I cannot imagine TiE without her."
I first met Geetha about three years ago and I have never seen her without
her trademark smile and can-do attitude. Her pleasant demeanor and upbeat
personality belie strong and confident managerial skills.
Even when we had this conversation, she was brimming with enthusiasm and new ideas.
Lokvani - . Tell us about your educational background: in
what capacity do you serve TiE Boston now?
Geetha : I have a Bachelors degree in Biology from the Bangalore University and a medical Technology degree from the Northeastern University in Boston. Before joining TiE I was senior Medical Technologist at the Children’s Hospital, Boston. I founded G. Ram, a financial, accounting and Tax services company in 1994. I was instrumental in changing G. Ram from a single service startup to a multi service company serving a range of small businesses and individuals. I also serve on the board of two non-profit organizations and serve as advisor to several startup companies.
I am now Director of Operations of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) Boston.
Lokvani : Why TiE Boston, how did you come to be associated with this organization?
Geetha : In 1998, Sandip Patel, Charter Member, introduced me to TiE . TiE’s mission inspired me tremendously and I signed up as a volunteer for TiECON’98. In 2000, I was hired her as Business Manager. In three years, I have been instrumental in centralizing TiE operations. I initiated the alliance partnerships with other professional organizations. and I co-initiated The Indus Women Forum along with Radha Jalan, Director of the Board and Charter Member at TiE. I was promoted to Associate Director of Operations in 2002. This has been an incredible journey for me. My discipline and fierce loyalty to TiE- the organization, the brand, and the people have sustained me. I believe that because I work shoulder to shoulder with my subordinates, it has given me distinct credibility and the ability to galvanize various volunteer teams. I was honored to be named the “Fearless leader of TiECON03” by Gautam Prakash, co-chair, TiECON03 and President of TiE.
Lokvani : Who should join TiE and why?
Geetha : Anyone who has interest in Entrepreneurship or professional development
should join TiE. TiE offers a superior forum for networking, learning and mentoring opportunities. It is a fertile ground for sharing knowledge and expertise and fostering
relationships with successful people.
Lokvani : How hard/easy is it for a woman to be in the corporate position that
you are in?
Geetha : There are challenges, no doubt. It is never easy. However, women are
making a lot of progress in securing executive positions in corporations.
Lokvani : . What would your advice be to women who want to do the kind of work that
you do?
Geetha : Leverage your strengths, focus on your vision and get what you want out
of your profession or business.
Lokvani : Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Geetha: I want to make a difference. I don't mind being a CEO of a company. I want to
start one or more companies and continue to work with smart people.
Yes, I am ambitious and I want to grow professionally and make money.
But at the end of the day, I want to do something important, help people and make a difference in the Indus community.
Lokvani : I remember your mentioning Indus women, could you elaborate on that?
Geetha : The Indus Women is a Special Interest Group that operates under the
TiE-Boston umbrella. Under a new, dynamic leadership, I expect it to grow rapidly.
Lokvani wishes Geetha success in every endeavor that she undertakes.
