KHMC Grand Finale Concert : A Real Treat for Rasikas

The KHMC concert held on Dec 6th at the grand and  beautiful residence of Smt. Chaya Rangaraj and Sri Srinivas Bagepalli at Marlboro, MA was a fantastic offering of varieties of Karnatic and Hindustani musical saga presented by the very well known  senior  artists as well as  talented junior artists  in New England area.

The concert opened with a pleasant  Sitar recital in Hindustani Classical segment , by the students of  Learnquest Academy of Music,  who are seeking support and guidance from prominent New England Sitarist Shri Jawad Noor. Jawwad Noor began his study of sitar under Ustad M. Alam Khan in 1991 and also studied with vocalists Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan and Ustad Nazir Ahmed. Since 2007, as a ganda-band shagird, he has been receiving consistent rigorous training from Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, the leading sitarist in the world from the Etawa gharana who is also a faculty member at the LearnQuest Academy of Music. The trio Saroj, Meena Gordon played Raag yaman in teental followed by  Raag Des in Ektaal recited by  Paras ,  all accompanied by Pranav Gathraju, a well know young tabla artist in New England area.It marked a beautiful ambience and gripped the audiences attention to the fullest, following an amazing senior segment  by Shri Jawad Noor  himself on Sitar who was again accompanied by Pranav Ghatraju on Tabla. Jawad Noor initiated with an  elaborated alap in Raag Charukeshi that set a perfect mood for audience to experience it’s essence followed by bandishes in Madhyalaya Jhaptal and Drut Ektaal. Jawad Noor also shared some  interesting facts about how his Guru, Ustad Shahid Parvez restructured the composition in Raag Cahrukeshi, which is originally a Carnatic Raag, to transform it into Hindustani style. This indeed left  curious audience spellbound as its very rare to come across such a uniqueness  applied to a Sitar composition. The perfectly matched Thihais and Taal variations on Tabla by Pranav Gathraj were flawlessly interweaved  transitioning into the final piece of an energetic Jhala.Jhala a sitar specific techniques usually played to demonstrate a fast paced alternation of main melody leading  to interesting permutations of both Raag and Taal simultaneously in Dhrut Gati . Jawad Noor then took audience into another dimension by treating them with a Bandish in Raag Des in Addha Taal that added a slight  flare of Thumri to  the composition as Addha is popularly associated with Thumris.  It was again a pleasant recitation that awed the audience  to flow in the beauty of  streaming Sitar that concluded the Hindusatani segment leaving behind an astonishing impact of one of the most beautiful instruments.

After an energetic Hindustani segment and lavishing festive dinner hosted by  generous hosts of KHMC concert,  the evening was all set to get charged with Carnatic Junior segment that was presented by the  vocal students of Sandhya Sridhar of Aradhna Center in Nashua, NH.  Accompanied by Vidya Raman on Violin  and Shivi Vytheswaran who is student of Mahalingam Santhanakrishnan, also known Shri Mali, on the mridangam, the junior students Abygail, Kavya, Saadhvi, Saisha, Spoorthi and Megha very enthusiastically presented the compositions of composers like Mysore Vasudevachar, Adi. Ranganayak Sundararajan of Mysore. Smt Revathi Ramaswamy who is also a practicing Anesthesiologist  has received rave reviews for her soulful traditional style of music, raga and tana malikas, and has been able to bring out in clear relief the rhythmic aspects in the kritis without in any way sacrificing their melodic content. She was accompanied by a distinguished New England  Mrudangist Shri Mali. She filled the evening  resonating  with Veena Swarams for the audience who  were absorbed in a deep tranquility arising out of divine compositions of the great composers  like Sri.
