Nrityotsav 2014:  An Invitation to Celestial Delight

As a lover of art, I cannot settle for anything less than a transformative moment. It is not a performance that I go to, but an active participation in the cosmic dance of Shiva. I know that Nataraja, the all-pervading primal energy is waiting to be tapped both by the dancer and the observer.

Nrityotsav, a festival of Classical Indian dance is such a journey to the ultimate delight. There are eternal stories to be enacted; music from Indra’s court and celestials descending from the heavens. A special day-long feast for the eyes and spirit takes place on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Regis College in Weston, MA. Dance troupes are coming to nudge you into ecstasy with non-stop dance in many different styles and forms.

Nrityotsav 2014 features an all-star cast from India and New England performing dance dramas capturing the choicest confluence of music, dance, and poetry. Rarely has such a caravan of Classical dance tradition and innovation come through for New England audiences. In a single-day, dancers, students and lovers of the art will experience a rainbow of lyrical narratives brought together by consummate artists who delight in stealing the hearts of connoisseurs.

Master Kathakali dancers from Kerala’s famed Kalamandalam will be showcasing their dance drama Prahalada Charitham. The Kathak duo of Nirupama-Rajendra and their Abhinava ensemble of celestial beauties from Bangalore will be presenting their innovative composition Kathakitathom: The Rhythm of Nirvana.

In addition, the Rasarang School of Performing Arts will be performing their highly acclaimed ‘Abhigyana Shakuntalam’, once again. While a host of New England area dance academies will be dancing together in a mega production, Shree Varnam.

I invite you to this dance heaven. Come and get connected to this vibrant network of artists, build lasting collaborations and help sustain the innovative spirit of the Classical Indian art forms.

Nrityotsav, the dance festival, is taking place on Saturday, November 8 - starts early at 10am, and goes on all day and evening, at the beautiful Casey Theatre, Regis College, Weston MA.
