“ The mission of Samarthanam which is to empower physically or mentally challenged and people with underprivileged backgrounds through developmental initiatives focusing on educational, social, economic, cultural and technological aspects touched me deeply and hence I decided to support this organization, says Subu Kota, Chairman of The Boston Group, who serves as the President of the US arm of this organization.

This unique Banglore based organization brings children with a wide variety of disabilities and trains them on the use of technology.  Sunish Gupta,  MIT Alum who serves as the Executive Director for this Foundation. Gupta is visually challenged and directed the development of the first reading machine.

Kota met Mahantesh, the founder of Samarthanam a few years ago and was impressed with the work. He then spent time in Banglore studying the organization. The mission of the organization and the impactful execution of ideas convinced Kota to lend his support to this organization.

“My expertise is in the area of online education. I understand the power of technology to educate people.  Since Smarthanam’s work used technology as a key element of their training, there was a great match between my passion and their work. I decided to help them in any possible way that I can.”

Samarthanam  runs a residential educational program for people with disabilities.  They provide vocational training to the students so that they can become independent and earn a livelihood. Several alumni from Samarthanam work at call centers, a profession that does not need sight or other physical abilities.

A unique angle to Samarthanam is that some of its students are very well trained dancers. “Dance is often seen as an activity that requires sight. The performance of these visually challenged students is proof that people with disabilities can indeed excel in a variety of ways” says Kota.

AID Boston is sponsoring a program by the Samarthanam group on Oct 12th at Keefe Tech in Framingham, MA.  We encourage you to see this amazing group and support this great cause.
