The International Convention of Maheshwari Mahasabha of North America (MMNA) was held in Detroit, Michigan from Aug. 29 - Sep. 1. MMNA members from New England had a strong presence with the dance team from New England being the winner of the talent show.
The Maheshwari are a clan that originates from Khandela, Rajasthan in Northwestern India.
They are a sub-group within the Marwari and Mewari community. The community is relatively small in population but found throughout India.
Many of its members now have migrated abroad for jobs & business as well. Many members of the community are very successful.
Building an awareness of the Maheswari cultural heritage amongst the youth was a big focus of the convention. Cultural events, ethnic food, presentations by Indian Dignitaries from the State of Rajasthan and events focused on matrimony were highlights of this event. The last convention had led to successful matrimonial alliance between
a young man and woman who attended the convention. Community service also was a big theme in the convention. Maheshwaris have a great tradition of philanthropy. Fundraising for educational programs was a big part of the event. One morning of the convention was also dedicated to making lunches to send to the nearby homeless shelter.
Prabhulal Rathiji and Draupadi Rathi from New England were founding members of the Maheshwari Mahasabha and they attended the event with their son and his family. Other attendees from New England included the family of Mona and Vishnu Khaitan and Rekha and Mahesh Parliwala.
There was something for everyone at the event. For the religiously inclined there were several bhajan sessions and an early morning Sundarkhand Path. Arti was held twice a day. Friday being Ganesh Chaturthi, there was a lovely procession as may be seen on the streets of
Mumbai. There were sessions on community service opportunities and business opportunities in Rajasthan. There were also some tours arranged to local attractions.
The event was a great opportunity for Maheshwari women to show off their fine sarees and jewelry. Many men also donned traditional wear with some even sporting a pagadi. The cultural programs in the evening were a great hit featuring traditional Rajasthani folks dance and bollywood numbers.
The convention helped energize the members of the community. As an outsider at the convention I had a great time learning about the culture, eating fabulous food and partaking in the various activities.
