On August 15th 2014 Nashua NH celebrated for the first time Indian Independence day. Indian flag was hoisted at Nashua city hall From August 11 to August 17th 2014 marking this celebration. Celebration took place at The Rotary Common Park which is displays gallery on the wall pictures of Nashua past and present, a labyrinth, reflection garden and holocaust memorial.
Event was a collaborative effort of first Indian American legislator in NH Latha Mangipudi and Chamber of commerce president Chris Williams. “The idea of celebrating Indian Independence day and Democracy came to me in light of recent elections in India. Over 300 million voters came out and voted. It was a very peaceful transition of government. When we are bombarded with conflicts and unrest around the world, here was an opportunity to celebrate peace†said Representative Mangipudi.
Williams was looking for ways to reach out to Indian Community in Nashua. A music concert with Peggo and Paul Hodes (former congressman from Dist2), Suzana Naik and Ujjwal Parikh singing American and Indian patriotic songs was held.
Companies such as Fidelity, Orecle, Sothern NH Medical Center and United Way co-sponsored with Chamber of Commerce to make this event happen.
Governor Hassan and Mayor of Nashua Lozeau both participated with excitement. Mayor expressed that she would like this to be annual event. Next year it will be on August 15th a Saturday.
