PROBLEM # 1
There are 27 students in a Chemistry class and 22 students in physics class. Seven of these students take Physics and Chemistry. What is the ratio of the number of students taking only physics to those taking chemistry?
PROBLEM # 2
There are 200 questions on a 3-hour examination. Among these questions are 50 mathematics problems. It is suggested that twice as much time be allowed for each mathematics problem as for each of the other questions. How many minutes should be spent on the mathematics problems?

PROBLEM # 1
In distributing milk at a summer camp it is found that a quart of
milk will fill either 3 large glass tumblers or 5 small glass tumblers.
how many small glass tumblers can be filled with one large glass
tumbler.
SOLUTION
There is a direct proportion between the two types of tumblers.
3 large tumblers = 1 large tumbler
5 small tumblers x small tumblers
3x = 5
x = 5/3 = 1.67
PROBLEM # 2
A coffee shop blends 2 kinds of coffee, putting in 2 parts of a 33 cents a pound grade
to 1 part of a 24 cents grade. If the mixture is changed to 1 part of the 33 cents grade
to 2 parts of less expensive grade, how much will the shop save in blending 100
pounds?
SOLUTION
33c (2 lbs) = 66c
24c (1 lbs) = 24c
90c is cost of 3 pounds or 30 c is cost of one pound
Second mixture
33c (1 lbs) = 33c
24c (2 lbs) = 48c
81c is cost of 3 pounds or 27c is cost of one pound
The shop will save 3c per pound or $3.00 for 100 pounds.
