MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee Alumni Declared Co-Champions At Scripps

Press Release
06/19/2014

At the recently concluded Scripps National Spelling Bee, two Indian American teens were named co-champions at the event. Both Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe, are alumni of the MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee. This is the second consecutive year that South Asian Spelling Bee alumni have not only dominated but actually won the competition.

While Hathwar is a veteran speller with MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee and is the reigning 2013 champion, Sujoe had started competing last year from the Dallas region.

Now in it's 7th successful year, the MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee is dedicated to finding the best speller in the community. The two teens proved so formidable in the finals of the National Spelling Bee, that organizers ran out of the 25 word spell off and named them co-champions. This is the first time in 52 years that there have been two champions for the competition.

Held at 12 different regions across the country, the MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee starts its season in mid June with the finale in mid August where spellers compete for a grand prize of  $10,000 and the thrill of being on Sony Entertainment Television. The contest is broadcast across the world in over 120 countries.

In the past years, alumni of the MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee have been winning at the Scripps National with Sukanya Roy in 2011, Arvind Mahankali in 2013 setting the stage for many aspirants to fulfill their dreams.

Apart from Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe, other alumni Tejas Muthuswamy, Gokul Venkatchalam and Ashwin Veeramani were also among the 12 finalists at Scripps.

Registration for the 2014 season of the MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee is now open at www.southasianspellingbee.com.
