The economy of the Vedic Period was based on agriculture, manufacturing and services. Labor was classified by the varna system, defined by these professions into four classes: Brāhmaṇa (priests), vaiśya (tradesmen), kṣatriya (warriors) and śudra (menials). The framework for Vedic workers was governed by four facets – dharma (religious values and righteousness), artha (wealth creation and management), kāma (social living and family life) and mokṣa (release from obligations); each facet was supposed to be lived to the fullest potential.
